Math degree?

As an undergrad, I majored in computer science and minored in mathematics and electrical engineering. As a grad, I took a few math courses.

Now, only months after completing my graduate degree, I’m thinking that if I go back for another, I might want to do a master of science program in mathematics or applied mathematics. I really would like to become much deeper mathematically.

Further still, I would also like to go deeper in computer science and electrical engineering, and therein lies my problem; I have a youthful infatuation with knowledge. What is a finite-minded man with a finite span of time to do with a seemingly infinite world of knowledge at his fingertips? Right now I’m re-studying DSP material. I had an undergraduate course on this topic and I scored high marks in it, but after 3 years, I’ve forgotten most of it. I want to re-learn it more thoroughly than I learned it the first time, so it will take a long time. After that, though, what? Wavelets? Complexity theory? Real & Complex analysis? Graph theory? Brush up on advanced calculus? Matrix theory? Number theory? NP theory? Compiler construction? Statistical signal processing? Aggh. It’s all too much. I need a jack in the back of my head like they had in “The Matrix”.
In any case, I’m not sure how I would actually go about it. Would I try to do part-time schoolwork while I am employed at $work, and slowly chip away at a degree one course at a time? Would I do online work, or try to make it to classes? If I were to quit my job to do schoolwork full-time, when would I do it (I’m certainly in no financial position to do such a thing any time in the near future)?

I follow this thought process to its conclusion all the time, and it’s always the same; I pursue self-study as devotedly as possible, and hope for a golden opportunity to go back someday.

doh! latent cleverness is my bane

It just occurred to me that bloggo ergo sum would have been a more clever name for this site.

Maybe I’ll change it.

I dunno.

New host, new name

My site has recently been moved to a new hosting provider, Dreamhost (dreamhost.com). I was previously at LayeredTech.

It doesn’t really have anything to do with LayeredTech’s service — because I really like it. They give you your own box for less than $80/month. A really good deal. The thing is, my personal financial situation didn’t warrant my spending that much on that. I have multiple computers at home on a cable internet connection that is fast (upload stinks, but the download is fantastic). I could run my own server from there. I also found, via reference, another hosting provider that gives me 95% of what I want at about 15% the cost. Check it out Dreamhost. Pretty amazing offering, really. Don’t forget to tell them that “aggieben” sent you.

For those of you who might have been following my previous blog…sorry for the interruption. I didn’t do much to keep my site up while I was in the process of fiddling with DNS and switching hosts. I didn’t even think anyone one was reading my site, but I check my logs the other day and saw that someone was subscribed to my rss feed (to my suprise). Anyway, things should get back to normal now. I’ll try to get my old posts moved over to this blog, but don’t hold your breath. If you read my blog, you know I’ve got more important things to do, you know, like fulfill my mortgage payments.

You’ll also notice that I’ve changed the name of the blog from “tail -f /dev/mind” to “cogito ergo sum”. Why? Well, for starters, only someone with some experience using UNIX-like systems will know what “tail -f /dev/mind” means. In this context, it means something like “dump my mind”. Instead, I’ve chosen cogito ergo sum as the title. It’s a Latin phrase, meaning “I am thinking, therefore I exist”. It’s well known, particularly by folks with an interest in metaphysical philosophy. The more common translation is “I think, therefore I am”, which is what most people will think it means (as I understand it, it’s a slight mistranslation). Anyway, it conveys the idea that this site is where I think, and thus where I exist, but it does it in a catchy and concise way.
